Purpose: The purpose is to provide physicians with a basic understanding of the principles of medical ethics and professionalism, and to describe how to apply the principles to clinical practice. The book illustrates the importance of medical ethics and professionalism through case examples.
Audience: It is intended primarily for medical students, residents, and physicians learning and practicing in the U.S. This book is useful for medical students and residents with upcoming licensing examinations because the book presents information in a fashion similar to the U.S. Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE). The editors and many contributors are informed and credible sources. The ethics and professionalism information is applicable to students and physicians abroad, but the legal information is specific to medical practice in the U.S.
Features: The book begins by highlighting important issues in medical practice related to three areas: ethics, professionalism, and jurisprudence. The remainder of the book consists of 36 medical case studies organized by topic.
