Gr 7–9—These titles introduce the history of, life in, and mission of three of our military branches. The first book describes the various types of aircraft used in the USAF, e.g., transports, fighters, bombers, etc. Army discusses the many branches in which one may serve and Coast Guard describes the purpose of each kind of vessel used. Weapons are mentioned, but are not the focus of the texts. All three titles outline the many areas in which men and women may pursue a career. Students who read more than one title will discover verbatim duplication in sections on enlistment qualifications, the Montgomery GI Bill, and benefits. Illustrations vary from half- to full-page color photography, and they are not always associated with the accompanying text. Special features include brief histories of women serving in the specific branch, short biographies, lists of rank insignias, and service-specific features. The information is current and accurate, and will be useful to young people considering a military career.
