Preface

Cardiology at a Glance is our compilation of teaching materials accumulated over the years at the Cardiovascular Institute of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. When our friends and colleagues asked us to recommend a concise, handy, and, most importantly, practical guide of cardiology, we found it difficult to suggest one that combined these qualities. We, therefore, decided to pool our resources and love for teaching and came up with this comprehensive manual.

The purpose of this book is to enable the reader, at a glance, to understand the key points in cardiology. The book is filled with easy to understand tables, figures, drawings, and algorithms to aid in quickly grasping difficult concepts. Whether in the Emergency Room (ER), coronary care unit (CCU), cardiac telemetry or step-down unit, office setting, or just on a cardiology elective, this book will be able to provide to the reader all the necessary information for points of discussion in a practical format.

The book is divided into four parts that capture the different aspects of cardiology: Part I covers cardiology in the emergency room (a symptom guided approach), Part 2 covers the acute syndromes in cardiology, Part 3 covers the consultative and outpatient aspects of cardiology, and Part 4 covers the interpretation of the current cardiac technologies we use.

Cardiology at a Glance is useful for a wide range of individuals in all aspects of training, who have an interest in cardiology, which includes but is not limited to: medical students, interns, residents, fellows, nurse practitioners, cardiovascular technicians, and physician assistants. In particular, internists and emergency room physicians who need a quick hands-on reference will undoubtedly benefit from this behind the scenes and deciphered view of cardiology.

We hope that you will find Cardiology at a Glance useful and applicable to your everyday involvement in this exciting specialty.
