Overview

The French Foreign Legion is a mysterious organization that operates mostly in the shadows. Capturing the Sunset is the coming-of-age story of someone who entered this clandestine group as a boy, and emerged a man.

Facing death taught this former legionnaire about life. He overcame adversity and struggled to survive. He fought wars that were not his to fight. He learned to love but also to hate. The protagonist narrates his stories with absolute honesty. His evaluations of himself are neither modest nor egotistical. He realizes that his uniform alienates him from the common people, who are overly suspicious and often disrespectful of the FFL. However, he accepts the outcomes of his choices. Instead of glorifying his actions, he repeatedly emphasizes that he is merely doing his job: “I’d rather someone hated me for who I truly am than love me for something that I could never be.”

Written using the first-person narrative, the book maintains a conversational tone. The protagonist makes the reader an integral part of his journey. I felt relieved when the legionnaires were on breaks and apprehensive whenever a new mission was announced. This book gives us the taste of a life that is vastly different from our relatively secure ones.

I usually have a hard time finding a book that keeps me interested. *Capturing the Sunset* truly has it all. Never have I read any book with such intense subtle command of telling a story. Like listening to the story of a close friend or family member; There is no part of this book that didn't have my mind racing with thoughts and my pulse quickening with the descriptive recollection of events. By no exaggeration, I laughed, cried, and even had to remember to breathe at times reading this book. It checks all the marks; action, thriller, life, death, learning to adapt, survival, love, career, family, loss, responsibility...

The writing of Capturing the Sunset is immensely elucidative without being superfluous. You understand exactly what the author is saying yet there is a shroud of confidentiality and ambiguity in the circumstances, that draw you ever deeper into the story.

Outstanding read! I could not put it down.
