Captive to the Word of God: A Particular Baptist Perspective on Reformed and Covenant Theology
The title of my book is taken from Martin Luther's defense of his works at his trial: Captive to the Word of God - A Particular Baptist Perspective on Reformed and Covenant Theology. The thesis of this book is that Baptists have historically been known as "people of the book," but have drifted away in many ways over the decades. The purpose of this book is to provoke them (and any other saints of the living God) to examine our ways and see where we have allowed unbiblical traditions to cloud our view of our Savior. It is intended to be a primer on these topics, not the end-all authority.
The book is made of four parts divided into 13 chapters. Here are the contents:
Part 1: The Baptists
1. The Name: When Were We First Called "Baptists"?
2. Ordinances: The What and Why
3. The Nature of the Local Church

Part 2: A Baptist View of Reformed Theology
4. The 5 Solas: The Basics of Reformation
5. Confessions: Their Purpose and Proper Use
6. Semper Reformanda: The Call to Biblical Renewal

Part 3: A Baptist view of Covenant Theology
7. The Eternal Covenant
8. The Covenant Between Man and Woman
9. The Covenants Between God and Man

Part 4: How it works together in a local church
10. Structure: The Form of the Local church
11. Membership: The Body of Christ
12. Worship: When We Gather
13. Evangelism: When We Scatter

About the Author

Having been baptized into the church at age 8, Stuart Brogden was saved at age 38. He quickly began service as a deacon and Sunday School teacher in a Baptist church. With increased study of the Bible, it became evident how many things in Baptist church life did not line up with the Bible. With service in other Baptist churches and training for service as a Baptist elder/pastor, the role played by history in the development of Christian doctrine and life became vividly evident. Since 2000, Stuart has been collecting, organizing, and distributing a digital Baptist library and briefly served as a Baptist pastor in a small church.
