Candid Observations in Transcendentalism (Surfing)
From the years 2019 - 2024 the world experienced a global pandemic, the Trump & Biden years, racial disparities, culture wars, inflation, and the beginning of two wars with American involvement. In any sense, these past five years will be studied as a polarizing and transformative time in American and World history and it is my goal here to show what the world of non-professional surfing looked like during this specific time period. As I was inspired by photographs from different decades of surfing's history, I hope that one day forty to fifty years from now this book shows an insight into the zeitgeist of surfing's eccentric side. I will note, that just about anyone these days can buy a camera and photograph someone surfing a wave, which is why I have become more obsessed with photographing the behind the scenes culture and out of water experiences that pertain to surfing's niche landscape. My writings have been pulled from my journals and scanned into this collection because it serves as a guide to my thoughts throughout this journey. These small execrpts are attached in my heart and in my mind to the photographs featued in this book even if they do not make sense to the reader. It is not acclamation of reward I seek from publishing these memories and if anything it is for those who were there to experience it as well; a time in history that we will never forget and on some levels will always cherish. As the world seemed to burn down around us, surfers of all backgrounds and ideaologies really stuck together during this time, and around the world exists thousands of cliques and scenes within surfing that even if I was not documenting it, are partial to the experiences found here in this book."
