Editorial Reviews

MAY 2023 - AudioFile

Steve Wannall takes on the narration of this steampunk-noir-detective story of a quasi-Victorian world filled with spies, undead creatures, and half-mechanical beings. Agent Lady De Winter, portrayed by gravelly-voiced Dawn Ursula, investigates gruesome murders and evil doings while searching for the Bookman and a missing jade statue. Her search takes her from the darkest alleys of the Rue Morgue in Paris to the New World. Wannall's relentless, emotionless narration is almost overwhelming, especially when he's describing graphic scenes of alien devices being implanted in De Winter. Ursula portrays De Winter's shell-shocked state and desperation as she encounters characters drawn from literature, each distinctly voiced by a member of the full cast. Background music and sound effects add character and creepiness to this dark world. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
