Overview

Callistus was a slave in Imperial Rome who escaped death on many occasions. He enjoyed the best of Rome and the worst: he lived through the Antonine Plague, imprisonments, wars, and Rome's second-century fire. Callistus experienced all: love and happiness, sorrow and loss, despair and hope. Callistus became pope in 218 AD and died a martyr in 222 AD.
