Burning Questions
We all must face change, that is the only constant in life, and this book serves to inspire the reader to drive that change in positive directions. The characters of this book must navigate the tumultuous issue of racial tension that existed during the early 1960s in the United States, particularly in the Deep South. For this group of characters, and the small town they inhabit, events have brought them to a turning point; regardless of what happens outside their borders, things here are about to change.

Back Cover:

Six year old Eliza Beth decided to sneak away to the park the other orphans were always talking about. Ordinarily, she remained secluded in the home because an unattended black child could lead to a lot of trouble; particularly if it came to light she was living in an otherwise white orphanage.

Eliza Beth caught herself after nearly tripping. Upon looking up, the burned-out ruins of a home startled her. The ominous building, and burned trees beside it, gave the young child the impression of a great figure climbing out of the ground. The dead branches waving in the breeze seemed like boney fingers reaching for her.

Johnny, an older teen from the orphanage, startled Eliza Beth back to reality. He scanned about nervously as he led the girl back home. Johnny had always been there for Eliza Beth, and for the other children of the home, but soon he would graduate and have to leave.

How long could her presence in the home be kept secret? How would the home's director keep Eliza Beth safe, if her presence were discovered? What more could Johnny do to protect her? So many burning questions swirled in his mind and his heart, and the passage of time did not bring any answers, but only more questions.

What would become of Eliza Beth and the other orphans? Will the mayor's schemes threaten the very existence of the home? With the prejudice of his sweetheart's parents against orphans, how could they ever be together again?

As Johnny strives to answer these questions, his courage and sacrifice lead others to places of repentance, forgiveness and redemption. Will the very character of the town be impacted?

About the Author

Skeeter developed a heart for children as a result of growing up without a father in his home. He resolved to be a better male role model with his own life. As early as fifth grade, Skeeter took other children under his wing, trying to be a good influence.

By high school, Skeeter expressed a passion for writing in composing pieces that were reactionary to assigned readings. As an adult, this translated into reactions to the troubling headlines of the day.

This also caused Skeeter to set unattainable moral standards, but his shortcomings drove him to thoughts of suicide. At the lowest point, his suicide plans were interrupted by a pastor calling to give him a Bible. Finally, Skeeter surrendered to the power of the Holy Spirit and found a renewed drive to make a positive difference with his life.

With this new direction, Skeeter left his Engineering career, completed seminary, and obtained a teaching certificate. He is currently working with children as a missionary in Paraguay.

Skeeter has also returned to his passion for writing. His goal is to foster in adults a caring attitude toward children and to encourage those who are already working to make children's lives better.

Skeeter has completed his first novel "Burning Questions" and is developing a second novel tentatively entitled "Under the Influence." More novels reside in Skeeter's mind, waiting to be written.
