Overview

It is the North-west coast of Scotland and there's a stranger in town - a shambling silent hulk of a man, face hooded even at the height of summer. He hangs around school playgrounds, laughing; leers through bedroom windows; camps out in a filthy old concrete pillbox. Meanwhile, Rob and Karen, newly married, settle into their new life together. Rob has been taken on as a janitor in the local school and begins to hear about the hooded man. Unpleasant things begin to happen. Unspeakable things. It is time for a showdown. It is time to find the Bunker Man.

What People are Saying About This

Pickney Benedict

Watch out, Braveheart! Scurry down your hidey-hole, Rob Roy! Suck it up, Highlander! Here comes Bunker Man: he has an anorak, not a kilt, and he's got a meat-cleaver instead of a claymore, and he's scarier than all three of you put together. Duncan McLean has created one of the most compelling, convincing, and weirdly sympathetic boys in Scottish, no, scratch that -- in any literature anywhere.

Robert Olen Butler

Bunker Man is a dark, creepy, resonant novel that stimulates not only the pulse but the mind.

John Dufresne

Bunker Man is a tough, gritty, unforgiving exploration into man's darkest hearts....It means to confont evil, its banality and its unimaginable horror head on -- and does so brilliantly.
