Books in the Design and Engineering for STEM series offers an up-to-date introduction to an industry in a time of change. Though building construction and fashion would appear to have little in common, each of these titles begins with design and materials and how both are increasingly impacted by social and environmental concerns – a major thrust in the series overall. In the first pages, each volume introduces terminology and a double-page spread lying out the "life cycle" of a typical product. The chapters that follow offer succinct, clearly written accounts of various stages of planning, design, and production as well as demolition, deconstruction, and recycling or disposal. Colorful sidebars present short articles on related topics. In addition to explaining the process planning and completing a project, Buildings emphasizes the impact of architecture, construction, and demolition on the environment and shows how that impact can be minimized at different stages. Hi-Tech Clothes introduces some surprising applications of technology to clothing design and examines several controversial issues in global clothing manufacturing. The concluding section looks at the environmental impact of cleaning clothes, recycling them, and disposing of them. Appearing on nearly every page, illustrations include many color photos and the occasional graph, digital drawing, or map. Gr 5–7—With a focus on STEM, these volumes survey their subject areas in dry but carefully structured ways, following common industrial products from initial designs to eventual disposals. For example, Clothes explains how garments develop from designs to become goods that are ultimately recycled, reused, or thrown away. Each generalized stage and concept is explained, summed up, recapped, and supplemented with diagrams, color photos, statistics, case studies, and historical notes-plus, both research topics and resource lists in the back matter. Approached cold, the staid prose and visuals are unlikely to kindle readers' interest, but where an enthusiasm for clothes, gadgets, architecture, and cars already exists, there is plenty here to broaden and deepen it.
