Overview

The theme of building bridges has been central for us, as Friends, since we began sitting silently to hear the promptings of the Inner Teacher who transcends the temporal and teaches us directly. Following leadings given by the Spirit, many have worked to bridge chasms between people in the name of social justice. There is much to learn from the ancient people in the Bible who were also called to cross the barriers that separated groups of people and that separated humans from God. The stories explored in this pamphlet are Moses leading the people to the Promised Land, Isaiah being called as a prophet, Jonah ministering to the people of Nineveh, and the woman with an issue of blood seeking healing from Jesus.

About the Author

Elizabeth O’Sullivan is a member of Laughing Waters Preparative Meeting, under the care of Bear Creek Meeting, Iowa Yearly Meeting (Conservative) (IYMC). She offered a version of this work as the daily Bible study at the IYMC yearly sessions in 2017, having also led Bible study there in 2016. In addition to her work with the Bible, Elizabeth writes a column about sustainable farming for her local paper and essays about domestic and sexual violence for the blog of the Hope Center in Faribault, MN. She has also published news articles, essays, newsletters, and children’s books.

Elizabeth lives with her husband and three children on her farm in Dundas, MN, where the family raised 3,000 free-range organic-fed chickens for meat in 2018. They also tend a flock of 800 free-range, organic-fed laying hens and often have about a half dozen hogs. In addition to farming, Elizabeth teaches group fitness classes.

Elizabeth is grateful for the committee that helps her be faithful to calls to ministry, and she is thankful that many Friends supported her in creating this Bible study. She is pursuing an MDiv at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in St. Paul, MN.
