Overview

Buffles the Baby Bison: Prairie Tale Adventures is the first in a series of illustrated children's book about the adventures of a young buffalo calf. In the first book of the series, Buffles explores his world while preparing to roam for the first time. The story winds through aspen groves, pine forests, meadows, mountains, lakes and prairies. Along the way readers are introduced to Buffles' family and friends. The story's theme revolves around the natural curiosity of the young, friendship, boundaries and the freedom to explore.
The illustrations for the story are created with cut, sculpted and layered paper in bright, cheerful colors. The colors and shapes are designed to illustrate interesting qualities of light and color in nature, including images reflected in water and colors seen in shadows.

About the Author

"When I was growing up, my sister and I spent our summers in Flagstaff in the ponderosa pine forests and at the public library: my two favorite places to be. The forest was where, with the neighborhood kids and our intermingled dog pack, we explored the mountain every day. Not far from where we lived was a buffalo preserve. We loved to see the buffalo calves sprinting, rolling, and tumbling as they played. It is this delight that I would like to pass on to young children through my story and illustrations. "As a child I was intrigued by dioramas and the idea of being able to run and play inside a miniature imaginary world. I wanted to recreate that feeling with the artwork in this book. All of the characters and landscapes are formed using hand-cut, sculpted and layered, brightly colored paper. The art work is intended to tell a part of the story that the words can't tell. It is designed to make children feel as though they can walk into the pictures." Mary Siska has been a graphic artist, an editor, and an instructor of English, history, music and mathematics. She lives with her family in Costa Mesa, California. This book is the first of a series of adventures for Buffles, the Baby Bison.
