Overview

Ben Carter, a sergeant in the 9th U.S. Cavalry posted to the Texas frontier, is allowed to go back to his east Texas home to visit his father. Torn between his guilt at leaving his father alone, and his realization that he can't live as a black farmer in a bigoted environment, he comes face to face with what 'family' truly means as he has to get to know his adopted brother, Toby, who seems to have mental problems, and learns that not all whites are evil.

Ben learns that his father's former master, Caleb Woods, is actually more of a friend than a boss, and that people have to be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. True friends will always be there when you need them.
