Publishers Weekly

In Strohmeyer's wacky fifth mystery starring Bubbles Yablonsky (after 2004's Bubbles a Broad), the former hairdresser and queen of the tube tops dons her first business suit ($30 hot pink skirt and jacket on layaway) to interview accused murderer Jill "Crazy Popeye" Simon for the Lehigh, Pa., News-Times, in Simon's holding cell. Unfortunately, Simon expires in mid-sentence after claiming she actually tried to save the victim, Liberty High School's beloved principal, Rudy Schmidt, who choked to death on the tie shoved down his throat. Bubbles's interview notes prove to be of interest to a number of delightfully goofy characters, including a Polish mafioso and a podiatrist with a foot fetish. Meanwhile, Bubbles hears that her boyfriend, stud-for-the-ages reporter Steve Stiletto, has announced he is engaged-to her-in a ploy to keep from getting transferred to London. This isn't exactly the kind of proposal she had fantasized. Strohmeyer pokes fun at Bubbles and her cohorts, but with obvious respect and fondness. Agent, Heather Schroder at ICM. Author tour. Library Journal

By a stroke of dumb luck, bumbling blonde rookie journalist Bubbles Yablonsky (Bubbles A Broad) interviews a homeless woman accused of murder just before said woman keels over, dead of poisoning. Police, lawyers, and nameless bad guys want Yablonsky's notes, the head of the so-called Polish mafia craves information about the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend, and Bubbles's boyfriend Stiletto persuades her to agree to a fake engagement. With all these demands, Bubbles can't help but be distracted. Wild action, crazy humor, and lively prose will engage Bubbles fans as well as Stephanie Plum buffs. Recommended. Strohmeyer lives in Vermont. [See Prepub Mystery, LJ 12/04.] Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Take one ditzy blonde, one drop-dead gorgeous photojournalist, and one two-carat diamond ring, and poof!-instant mayhem. Now that Bubbles Yablonsky (Bubbles a Broad, 2004, etc.) has hung up her curling iron for good, the ex-hairdresser takes her new career seriously. The Lehigh News-Times reporter is willing to risk a contempt-of-court charge rather than surrender the notes from her interview with accused murderer Julia "Crazy Popeye" Simon. Popeye's poisoning in her jail cell makes the police think maybe she didn't kill high school principal Rudolph Schmidt, even though podiatrist Cerise May found the bag lady in her waiting room with her hands down the administrator's throat. And they think Bubbles's notebook may help them find out who did kill Schmidt, and whether the killing is connected to May's ex-boyfriend, Polish mafioso Karol Smolak. Of course, keeping her mother Lulu out of trouble and helping daughter Jane fill out her application to Princeton take up most of Bubbles's spare time, so it isn't until the judge fines her $1,000 per minute until her notes resurface that she decides she'd better find out who killed Schmidt. But Bubbles doesn't reckon with the biggest distraction of all: AP photographer Steve Stiletto, who plunks a diamond on her finger and asks her to pretend to be his fiancee so he doesn't get sent to London. Fans will be thrilled at the latest twists in Bubbles's career and love life, with a nifty puzzle as a bonus. Agency: ICM
