Overview

The third edition of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Neurology has been completely rewritten and restyled, reflecting the rapid and extensive advances that have taken place in this field over the last 10 years. Accompanying chapters from neurology specialists across Europe and the USA are a set of stunning specially commissioned full colour illustrations.

The book is divided into three sections. The first section discusses the essentials of neurological diagnosis including, examination, lesion localization, clinical pathology, electrophysiology, neuroradiology and tissue biopsy. And it is within the neuroradiology chapter that the greatest differences from the previous edition are evident. Increased access to advanced imaging has greatly expanded neurological knowledge and here these techniques are explored in depth alongside thorough descriptions of radiographic techniques typically used in small animal practice.

The second section focuses on clinical presentation and has been expanded with the addition of several new chapters on different presenting problems. This has been necessary due to the overwhelming increase in information now available on both new and previously described diseases. The aim of these chapters is to provide the practising veterinary surgeon with information identify the area of the nervous system responsible for their patient's clinical signs. The reader is then guided through an appropriate diagnostic approach and the different diseases to be considered. Each chapter in this section presents the diseases in a similar fashion; detailing the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of each disease.This is followed by the final section of completely new chapters devoted to the special treatment considerations necessary for the neurological patient. Considered here are emergency neurology presentations (e.g. head injury), neuroanaesthesia, clinical pharmacology, radiotherapy, neurosurgery and rehabilitation of the neurological patient.

Description: This book is designed to give an overview of small animal clinical neurology, and to serve as a ready source of organized information to the busy practitioner. It has been completely rewritten and restyled from the last edition which was published in 1995.
Purpose: The book was designed to document the advances of knowledge in the field of veterinary neurology over the past 10 years. These worthy objectives are met by the international group of authors involved in its production.
Audience: The book is aimed at the general practitioner, but is also useful to students as well as residents interested in the field of small animal neurology. All of the authors involved in the production of this book are credible authorities in the subjects that they were chosen to cover.
Features: The organization of the book follows the steps involved in clinical management of the neurological patients. Chapters on neurological examination and neurolocalization are followed by those based on neurological problems identified by such preliminary examinations. The final section contains therapeutic options and considerations for the different problems faced in small animal neurology. A nice feature of the book is the appendix containing neurological disorders associated with different cat and dog breeds.
Assessment: Recent advances in our understanding of small animal neurology, as well as new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques justify the replacement of the previous edition. This is a very useful book to have on the practice bookshelf for regular reference during case management.
