About the Author

I was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in Puyallup, Washington, the middle son of a public school science teacher and a registered nurse. I attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, and graduated with a degree in English Education as well as a comparative religious studies minor. Following graduation, I married my lovely wife, Kim, and we moved to Portland, Oregon, where I attended Multnomah Biblical Seminary, eventually graduating with a Masters in Divinity while working nearly full time as a youth minister in Woodland, Washington. While in Woodland, I served shortly on the City Council, and was a founding member of a nonprofit called the "Woodland Community Service Center" that served those in need with a food bank, clothing bank, job training services, and more. Kim and I were foster parents until moving to Montana for a pastoral position in 2005. We adopted twice from China, and have been involved in advocacy for foster, adoptive, and special needs families ever since. In 2012 I became the chaplain at Intermountain Residential, a home for severely emotionally disturbed children that have experienced a mental health crisis that requires they seek treatment outside their home.

From 2013-2017 I was a part of Multnomah Biblical Seminary's first Doctor of Ministry cohort in cross-cultural ministry, graduating in 2017. My thesis project focused on building trauma-informed communities of faith and was the genesis for my first published work, Bruised Reeds and Smoldering Wicks. I love God and I love children of all abilities, especially those from hardship and trauma. I write because I have a passion to help others and share whatever insight and wisdom I have gained over the years. When I am not working or writing, I help run my children to 4-H, soccer, school or martial arts activities. I like to fly fish when I can, follow professional football and baseball, and enjoy hikes with my family. I hope you can see my "heart" in my writing and feel as if I am there with you, having a conversation about things that truly matter.
