Overview

With a warm, genuine voice, Provenzano draws you into her life in war-torn Liverpool, filled with air raids and blackouts, backyard shelters, incendiary bombs on parachutes, food rations and grade-school gas masks.

She marries an Italian-American GI at the age of 17, and brings us across the choppy Atlantic in a converted cattle ship, heading for post-war America, train rides, headlines in newspapers and sudden deaths. Longing for mother England and friends back home, she paints a picture of her own headstrong children, journeys back home and abroad, and unexpected twists of fate.

A unique blend of eyewitness history, nostalgia and the joy and pain of American immigrant family life, this lively, illustrated story reminds us of the ‘Greatest Generation' and their hard-earned independence. With heart and a British "Scouser" sense of humor, Provenzano will bring a tear to your eye, and a smile to your face.

About the Author

Doris Alma (Taylor) Provenzano is a lively, 83-year old mother of 5, and Grandmother/Greatgrandmother of many, who still plays golf in the Summer, bowls in the Winter, and travels the world with her husband Tony, now in their 66th year of marriage.

She and her blind brother Billy, her pub-singing brother Bobby and sister Margaret, grew up in war-torn Fazakerley Liverpool amid food rations, air-raid shelters, fish & chips and gas masks.

Born June 28, 1928, Doris is the daughter of William and Alice Taylor, herself one of 10 children. William met Alice upon returning from India as a member of the Queen's Calvary, and they married in Liverpool, an 800-year-old city, at one time the largest shipping port in England.

Doris and Tony still live in the same house they purchased in 1956 in Hoffman Estates, IL, and were recently featured in an historical book about the town. They remain one of only three original residents of Hoffman Estates.
