Description: This book presents photomicrographs of pathology slides and 3-D pathology sections in comparison to actual mammographic images to elucidate why mammograms appear the way they do. A large portion of the book is devoted to description and illustration of breast structural subtypes, with an emphasis on detecting early subtle changes in order to aid in earlier detection of breast cancer.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide radiologists with the skills necessary to detect breast cancer at its earliest possible stages, while also being able to exclude it in the vast majority of screened women. This is a worthy objective, which the book properly addressed. The presentation of material was optimal in achieving this goal.
Audience: According to the author, this book is targeted towards radiology residents and radiologists who will be interpreting mammographic images. This is an appropriate audience. The authors are credible authorities in mammography.
Features: After a brief introduction of normal breast anatomy and description of the four basic building blocks of the breast, the five mammographic parenchymal patterns are reviewed in depth, using photomicrographs of pathology slides in comparison to actual mammographic images. Next, the rationale and scientific evidence for detection of early breast cancer is investigated and a systematic approach to analyzing mammograms, with an emphasis on early detection is presented. Breast regions with a higher incidence of cancer and characteristics of neoplastic lesions are reviewed. Two final sections on histologic technique, tissue sampling, and mammographic positioning techniques are included. This book is very descriptive and illustrative in demonstrating the basic five mammographic parenchymal patterns and applying a systematic approach to detection of early breast cancer within each type of pattern. The illustrations, photomicrographs, and mammograms are of very high quality, providing somewhat of a mammographic atlas. The strengths of this publication are the detailed pathologic and histologic photomicrographs in comparison to actual mammographic images. It helps to provide a deeper understanding of breast architecture, both normal and abnormal.
Assessment: This is a highly useful tool for those radiologists and residents wishing to develop advanced mammographic interpretive skills and gain better understanding of normal breast anatomy. It is successful in providing a mammographic atlas for reference, as well as tools for developing improved interpretive abilities. It is a useful addition to other publications in mammography.
