Description: This volume in the series, Breast Cancer: Early Detection with Mammography, focuses on identification of what is described as "crushed stone" type calcifications, and stresses the prognostic difference between the subtype of breast cancer that presents with this finding and more aggressive subtypes.
Purpose: According to the preface, the objectives are to educate both the medical community and patients about advances in technology that have made detection of breast cancer possible at earlier and earlier stages. These are certainly very worthy objectives. Although the series is not yet complete, this component does meet the stated purposes, especially with respect to medical personnel.
Audience: The book will probably be of greatest interest to radiologists, pathologists, and surgeons with a subspecialty interest in breast cancer. It is probably more in depth than most generalists need and almost certainly beyond the scope of those without a strong medical background.
Features: This is an extensive review of the radiographic findings and underlying pathologic processes that result from cancer arising in the terminal ductal lobular units (TDLUs). Although the scope is obviously narrow, it is intended as one volume of a much larger set. The strength of the book lies in its exquisite radiologic pathologic correlation. The emphasis on pathology is familiar to those who have attended Dr. Tabar's excellent CME courses over the years. It will be a welcome addition to their libraries as a review and expansion of topics covered in those lectures. One unique feature is the inclusion of 3D glasses to view stereoscopic images. From a practical standpoint, I don't know how helpful this really is, but it is an amusing extra feature. The only potential shortcoming is the fact that the level of detail and depth of the material are probably beyond the needs of residents and of clinicians who do not specialize in breast cancer.
Assessment: This is a high quality book with excellent illustrations. Along with the rest of the series, it would be a great addition to the libraries of members of the medical community who specialize in breast cancer. It covers this topic in greater depth than most other books in this field.
