Description: This is a basic overview of how to perform general veterinary procedures on cattle in the field. Each section has useful instruction boxes with points of discussion or warnings about things to consider. The previous edition was published in 2005. This edition included access to online resources, but I was not able to access the website.
Purpose: The purpose, as described by the authors, is to provide a pocket reference for use in the car while on veterinary calls, with the aim of promoting a high level veterinary care in the field with consideration of sterile techniques, economics, and animal welfare. This is a worthy objective and this is a helpful book for field service veterinarians who may not always have access to the internet for research assistance.
Audience: Written for practitioners, the book provides good descriptions of how to do procedures in the field and prompts practitioners to consider potential complications and animal welfare issues. The authors have many years of clinical experience working with cattle and have consulted with practicing veterinarians to ensure the relevance of the information.
Features: The book covers everything from presurgical preparation to surgery and postoperative care for routine cattle conditions. It covers the basics of analgesia and anesthesia as well as supportive care. There are six chapters on surgery in specific organ systems including abdominal surgery and urogenital surgery. Each chapter provides a review of the anatomy as well as tips and warnings to ensure successful outcomes. Line drawings and photographs of the procedures illustrate techniques.
Assessment: With its compact size and portability, this is a useful resource to carry in the veterinary truck as a quick reference for unfamiliar surgical techniques. Since the previous edition, the lameness section has been rewritten and modern techniques for surgical correction of displaced abomasums have been added.
