Overview

"Born In Mississippi Raised in Buffalo, New York" Written by a local author "Bettye Joe Holmes Chansamone"
is a must read book, based on the real life stories of the Jacksons / Stewart and Holmes family.

The book is full of compelling and unique stories and events covering a span of 4 generations.

I named the book "Born In Mississippi Raised in Buffalo, New York" Due to the fact that I
' Bettye Joe Holmes Chansamone' (the author) was born in Mississippi and raised in Buffalo, New York. Naturally. "Born In Mississippi Raised in Buffalo, New York was the appropriate title for this book.

The book tells the story of 'Gladys Stean Holmes' an African woman who moved to Buffalo, New York in 1957 with her husband 'Curley Holmes' and their eight children from a small hick town that wasn't on the map(Gloster, Mississippi). It was their dream to leave the difficult characteristics of the farming life which they lived, and move to Buffalo, New York. Modernism . (indoor plumbing, toilet tissue, gas stove, electrical appliances, a school, a church, and a corner store were down the street from our home. There were super markets in every direction. Etc.). Two years later, Gladys Stean Holmes stood up for her rights and paved the trail for other African American women!

About the Author

As a child living in Mississippi; directly after supper was leisure time. So I chose to hang around my grandparents and parents while they sat on their front porch listening to the radio and reminiscing about their past years. Every day they exchanged magnificent, heartfelt stories. I was moved passionately and simply could not teat myself away from that amusing, sometimes serious reminiscing. (That is why I didn't go to the creek with my siblings to learn how to swim). Sure. Those fascinating, extraordinary stories captivated and awakened my imagination to no end. That is what inspired me to write a book based on the 'Jackson / Stewart and Holmes family.

There are stories in this book that will make you laugh, sad, cry or even angry.

"I am extending an invitation to you to read my book. Please join me as I travel back to the deep south to the small town of Gloster, Mississippi where my story begins until 1959, when my mother made history, by paving the way for African American women when she became the first African American woman to give birth in Children's Hospital. My book is written from my heart to yours. And it will bring back forgotten memories for some and enlighten others."
