The book tells the story of 'Gladys Stean Holmes' an African woman who moved to Buffalo, New York in 1957 with her husband 'Curley Holmes' and their eight children from a small hick town that wasn't on the map(Gloster, Mississippi). It was their dream to leave the difficult characteristics of the farming life which they lived, and move to Buffalo, New York. Modernism . (indoor plumbing, toilet tissue, gas stove, electrical appliances, a school, a church, and a corner store were down the street from our home. There were super markets in every direction. Etc.).
