Description: This reference on all aspects of borderline personality disorder (BPD) covers the history, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease.
Purpose: According to the editor, this book will serve as a source for mental health professionals seeking answers to the many questions regarding the understanding and treatment of BPD. These are worthy objectives, considering that BPD is a relatively common diagnosis often leading to significant psychosocial impairment and healthcare utilization/cost. These objectives were largely met, but the preface stated the book would conclude with a report by Michael First on possible changes in the way we diagnose BPD. I could not find this section in the book.
Audience: The book was written for psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals. In my opinion, practitioners in each of these fields will likely find the book useful. Each chapter was written by a renowned expert in the area.
Features: It begins with a review of how the disease has been conceptualized throughout history and describes the symptomatic presentation of the borderline patient. In the discussion on the etiology of BPD, it includes factors of environment (including sexual abuse), temperament, neurobiology, and genetic inheritance. The book does an excellent job of looking at the both the psychosocial and neurobiological aspects of the disease. It includes guidelines for treatment, both psychopharmacological, as well as psychotherapy (psychodynamic, dialectical behavioral, family, and partial hospitalization therapies are all covered). Most chapters contain a review of the existing medical literature, pointing out those areas which are lacking. Each chapter concludes with a list of references.
Assessment: This is a valuable resource for mental health practitioners seeking increased understanding and improved treatment of borderline personality disorder patients.
