Boots and Saddles - Illustrated: Life in Dakota with General Custer
Boots and Saddles is the story of life with General George Armstrong Custer as told by his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer (1842–1933). She was a housewife on the plains, nurse to frostbitten soldiers, and any-hour-of-the-day hostess to the regiment. She was also the garrison's favorite confidante, and would-be Indian fighter whenever the women of the regiment had to be left alone. Elizabeth rode with Custer on all of his major expeditions except his summer Indian campaigns.

Boots and Saddles offers a gentle, loving portrait of Custer by the person who knew him best. Elizabeth' devotion to him is reinforced throughout the book, which ends the only way it could: by Custer's disaster at Little Big Horn.

About the Author

Elizabeth Clift Bacon Custer (April 8, 1842 – April 4, 1933) was an American author and public speaker, and the wife of Lt Colonel George Armstrong Custer. She spent most of their marriage in relatively close proximity to him despite his numerous military campaigns in the American Civil War and subsequent posting on the Great Plains as a commanding officer in the United States Cavalry. Left nearly destitute in the aftermath of her husband's death, she became an outspoken advocate for his legacy through her popular books and lectures. Largely as a result of her decades of campaigning on his behalf, Custer's iconic portrayal as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of 'Custer's Last Stand' was a canon of American history for almost a century after his death.
