Overview

This book tracks the history of the Singer Bantam and provides detailed specifications and performance metrics. The book is a great asset to anyone restoring a Singer Bantam. The Bantam was a major change in body construction for the Singer Company. Previous cars had coach-built bodies [i.e. with wooden frames] whereas the Bantam was a pressed steel body with wood used only for floor boards and for holding the trim panels. A new underslung chassis carried this new body. Hydraulic brakes were still part of the equipment however with the drum size down to 8 inch from 10 inch in the preceding 9hp model. The engine was initially the 972cc two main-bearing crankshaft engine used in the preceding model but with a new cylinder head. A new three speed gearbox with synchromesh between 2nd and top replaced the four-speed constant mesh gearbox. The four-speed box reappeared in the "Super Nine" of 1937 along with the counterbalanced crankshaft version of the 972cc engine.
