Book of Days: A Novel

If Cameron Vaux can't find it, he will lose everything.

“You will lose your mind. When it starts happening...you must find the Book of Days.” When Cameron's dying father delivers this message, he brushes it off. Lose his memory? He's only twenty-five. Find a book that doesn't even exist. Foolishness. Nothing more than the product of his father's dementia.

But now, eight years after his father's death, it's happening. Chunks of Cameron's life are just-gone. Even memories of his wife, killed two years ago, have slipped away. Could it be...? Is his father's eerie prediction coming true?

Desperate, Cameron determines to fulfill his father's last wish. He will find the Book of Days. But when a lead takes him to the small town of Three Peaks, Oregon, Cameron realizes dark secrets are at work. The townspeople, warm as apple pie at first, turn cold as liquid nitrogen when Cameron mentions the Book. As his mind works against him, Cameron discovers that friends may be enemies. And the one person Cameron can't stand? She might be his strongest ally.

But there are others seeking the Book. Others who will stop at nothing to get it. And they're closer than Cameron ever imagined....

Editorial Reviews

MARCH 2011 - AudioFile

[Editors' Note: The following is a combined review of ROOMS and BOOK OF DAYS]--The author's capable narration presents two suspenseful novels featuring characters who are facing down personal demons. ROOMS is an emotional story of life-altering choices, and BOOK OF DAYS recounts a son's fear of inheriting his father's Alzheimer's disease. Speaking in a strong, deep voice, Rubart starts ROOMS with an easygoing narration that soon changes to tones of mystery when a house on the Oregon coast takes on a secret life of its own. In BOOK OF DAYS Rubart’s pace slows as a father warns a young man to "find the book of days" minutes before he dies. The action of both novels comes near the end when Rubart's even pace switches to short, punchy sentences. While ROOMS builds to a tense conclusion, BOOK OF DAYS is for listeners willing to wait for the climactic action. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine

Publishers Weekly

In this supernaturally tinged suspense novel, Rubart (Rooms) crafts a credible legend: a "book of days" contains the past and future, and Cameron Vaux needs to find it. He's only 33, but his father, who died at 59 of dementia, instructed Cameron to find the book. Cameron's late wife, Jessie, who died in a small plane accident, also knew about the book. And now Cameron's own memory is slipping, lending urgency to his quest. He's joined in the hunt by Jessie's foster sister, Ann Banister, a TV adventure show host who's interested in finding out more about her family. The answers for both lie in Three Peaks, a scenic small town in central Oregon that's also headquarters for a New Age group headed by the commanding Jason Judah. Cameron and Ann come off as engaging and well-developed characters, but the constraints of Christian fiction make the New Age guru more caricature than character. Within those constraints, Rubart has created a page-turner. (Jan.)

Library Journal

Cameron Vaux's mind is slipping; memories of his wife, who died two years ago, and his father are vanishing. Then he learns about the mysterious Book of Days, in which the memories of each soul on Earth are recorded. Finding the book is Cameron's only hope, and he is joined in his quest by his sister-in-law, Ann. Their search takes them to Twin Peaks, OR, where they meet a New Age fanatic who will do anything to retrieve the book. VERDICT This supernatural suspense story by the author of Rooms is well crafted and full of plot twists and turns. It will appeal to fans of Ted Dekker and Tim LaHaye.
