Description: This is the tenth edition of a handbook that describes how to correctly position a patient for different x-rays and how to choose the right technique.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students or technologists learn the exact centering and positioning to get a quality x-ray and to figure out the best way to choose a technique. The book meets these objectives, providing all the different projections done in x-ray in a pocket-sized guide. It is very helpful for those just learning how to do these projections or for technologists who might not do some of the projections very often.
Audience: The audience includes students in radiology programs and technologists new to the field or those who want a refresher on the different projections. With the images of the projections and descriptions of the centering for each exam, this book is very helpful. The authors have also written a book on basic anatomy and procedures that many schools of radiology use.
Features: This book details each projection, with an image of each exam and centering of the part, and how to choose the best technique. Each chapter is separated into different areas of the body. It discusses how to position the patient, what criteria should be demonstrated, exposure of the part, and any notes that might help in understanding more about the procedure. Each exam has images of how to position the patient as well as the radiographic image so readers know what it should look like after an x-ray is taken. It also provides an area for a technique chart for use at another time.
Assessment: This handbook is great choice to keep readers up to date with changing projections and other ways to do exams. It is helpful that it can fit in a pocket, making it easy to take a quick glance when needed. For additional information on anatomy, etc., readers can consult the authors' Bontrager's Textbook of Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy, 10th edition (Elsevier, 2021).
