Bonkers: My Life in Laughs

Jennifer Saunders' comic creations have brought joy to millions. From Comic Strip to Comic Relief, from Bolly-swilling Edina in Ab Fab to her takes on Madonna or Mamma Mia, her characters are household names.

But it's Jennifer herself who has a place in all our hearts. This is her funny, moving and frankly bonkers memoir, filled with laughter, friends and occasional heartache - but never misery.

BONKERS is full of riotous adventures: accidentally enrolling on a teacher training course with a young Dawn French, bluffing her way to each BBC series, shooting Lulu, trading wild faxes with Joanna Lumley, touring India with Ruby Wax and Goldie Hawn.

There's cancer, too, when she becomes 'Brave Jen'. But her biggest battle is with the bane of her life: the Laws of Procrastination. As she admits, 'There has never been a Plan. Everything has been fairly random, happened by accident or just fallen into place. I'm off now, to do some sweeping...'
Prepare to chuckle, whoop, and go BONKERS.

Award-winning actress, performer, and writer Saunders tells her story from childhood to stardom in this wryly humorous memoir. Her zany comedy team with Dawn French evolved from entertaining in small venues to starring in a BBC series. Saunders went on to develop and appear in the wickedly funny Absolutely Fabulous (aka Ab Fab) series that received wide acclaim. Here, she offers stories of her family; snatches of comedy dialog; conversations with her agent; wide-ranging sources of comedy sketches and characters (a mean school headmistress, plots of contemporary films, etc.); working with famous individuals such as Goldie Hawn; her wedding; the creation of French and Saunders; and, on a more serious note, her bout with cancer. The performer-author approaches her life philosophically and with a quirky wit, writing in an engagingly unique style—one that draws in the reader as a friend—meandering from scene to scene and down hilarious side roads along the way. This memoir, which is enhanced by many photographs, doesn't take a traditional or linear approach, but it's certainly entertaining. VERDICT A must for fans of Saunders and of her series. However, even those not familiar with her work but who appreciate comedy will find this an amusing read.—Carol J. Binkowski, Bloomfield, NJ
