Bone disease, particularly osteoporosis, has emerged as a common and serious complication of solid organ transplantation. Description: This book provides an overview of the pathogenesis of transplant-related bone disease along with generalized guidelines for management. Sections specific to various transplant recipient populations are included.
Purpose: The intended and achieved purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of the scientific and clinical aspects of bone disease in transplant recipients. The high prevalence of bone disease in an ever-increasing transplant recipient population, related to both the underlying disease state and the therapeutic interventions that allow for successful long-term transplant survival, make a compilation such as this a worthy and needed resource.
Audience: This book is written primarily for transplant practitioners and for those involved in the management of pre- and post-transplant related bone disease. Separate sections by a variety of expert authors encompassing essentially all transplant specialties are included.
Features: The book begins with a somewhat simplistic and overly generalized review of transplantation immunology and immunosuppressive agents. The next section reviews the incidence and prevalence of bone disease in the transplant population and discusses the mechanisms by which this occurs. Although quite repetitive, the third section reviews bone disease as it relates to organ specific transplantation and several of these chapters are the most informative and well written in the book. The final section on the management of bone disease in the transplant population reiterates much of the information already presented, but provides a nice overview of possible treatments and restates that our knowledge and abilities in this arena are limited and in need of further investigation.
Assessment: Bone disease in transplant recipients is a significant issue and this book makes a nice attempt to compile information regarding the overall pathogenesis of this entity as well as organ-specific issues and treatment options. While the heterogeneity of the various transplant populations warrants specific discussions, much of the information presented here is quite repetitive. Overall, however, this is a useful and needed review for those involved in the investigation or management of transplant-related bone disease.
