Description: This is the third edition of a comprehensive book on bone densitometry. The first edition was published in 1998, the second in 2003.
Purpose: The author relates how his experience as a practitioner has matured along with the field as it has incorporated numerous other clinical states involving bone demineralization. The book has evolved as the field has grown and now includes chapters on patient selection and comparisons of guidelines from various professional organizations.
Audience: This compendium is essential for every clinician who routinely provides care and advice to patients who potentially could have bone demineralization. It can be used to obtain as little or as much information one is seeking, such as how to refer patients and the advantages and disadvantages of different equipment types. The author is a greatly respected clinician and researcher in bone densitometry.
Features: The beginning chapters relate the history of estimating bone density and how the subsequent physics brought medical science to the present. This is both informative and educational, giving the historical nuances that make the study of medicine fascinating. Of great importance is the author's careful description of the terms used in densitometry as these have been refined over time. The physics involve much statistics and the author has positioned this information in a separate chapter, which prevents readers from getting caught up with some of the difficult, albeit important aspects of the field. There are great chapters about quality control and patient safety and an extensive comparison and contrasting of the different models of commercially available densitometers. A unique offering is the option of obtaining 30 hours of accredited continuing medical education. An accompanying CD-ROM has a patient questionnaire, calculator, and fracture risk predictor software, as well as the CME review.
Assessment: This is one of the seminal books on bone densitometry and should be in every medical library of teaching institutions and practitioners caring for and advising patients with potential bone demineralization.

This book describes the basic science of bone densitometry, and the application of this diagnostic tool in clinical practice. The purpose is to help the reader become proficient in the application and interpretation of bone densitometry. There are a limited number of readers who will be interested in reading an entire book on this subject. The book meets the author's objectives. It is written for anyone interested in bone densitometry (primarily practitioners). It will be of most interest to those who specialize in the diagnosis or treatment of osteoporosis. The author is a highly credible authority in the subject matter. The content is comprised of basic science aspects of bone densitometry, including statistical issues and quality control/clinical aspects (fracture prediction; effects of age, disease, and drugs on bone density; techniques and instrumentation; and clinical indications). The book provides in-depth coverage of the subject. It is well referenced and well illustrated. This is an in-depth discussion of bone densitometry and its use in clinical practice. Most primary care physicians will not have the time or interest to read such a treatise. On the other hand, the book provides a reference source for those who would wish to gain a comprehensive understanding of this subject matter.
