Overview

bees and cricket-dependent diets to species die-off and pummeling hurricanes, Blue Skies
deftly explores the often volatile relationships between humans and their habitats, in
which “the only truism seems to be that things always get worse.”
An eco-thriller with teeth, Boyle's Blue Skies is at once a tragicomic satire and a prescient
novel that captures the absurdity and “inexpressible sadness at the heart of everything.”

Alyssa Bresnahan narrates a satirical novel about the climate crisis. Cat lives in Florida with her frequently absent fiancé. On impulse she buys a pet snake for company. In California her brother, Cooper, an entomologist, loses an arm to an infected tick bite. Bresnahan manages to make both Cat and Cooper believably sympathetic without softening their unlikable personality traits: Cat is needy and often careless, while Cooper is selfish and frequently pedantic. Neither Cat nor Cooper is a bad person per se, and that is what Bresnahan captures in her portrayal of both.
