Overview

Dustin Lynch spent some time crafting the friendly bro-next-door image he cemented on Current Mood, the 2017 album that solidified the commercial breakthrough of 2014's Where It's At. Blue in the Sky, his fifth album, is his third record in this shiny, sunny vein, a collection of songs so cheerful they manage to make heartbreak seem not so bad. Lynch has whittled away the lingering traces of Jason Aldean's glowering R&B, leaving Blue in the Sky as clear and sweet as a Saturday afternoon. The record is designed to be a soundtrack to all manner of leisure activities: sipping "Tequila on a Boat," roaming "Huntin' Land," getting into "Party Mode" for an evening that concludes with "Stars Like Confetti." Often, Blue in the Sky wanders into territory that's pretty corny, but Lynch serves up his good times with a smile, an affect that serves him equally well on breezy pop tunes and earnest ballads. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
