Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson go back. Waaaaay back. They got their start drawing and writing stories in what feels like the early Jurassic period, also known as the '90s, when they were making comics in the back of their high school art room. Annnnnd they never stopped!

Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson have been making stuff together for a very looong time! They created the animated television program Rocket Monkeys, and they’ve directed countless animated commercials for major global brands. Their short films have won numerous awards and their cartoons and comics have been published in The New Yorker and Nickelodeon magazine. Through all these different mediums their humor and storytelling always rings sweet, silly, and slightly twisted. Together at First Second, they've produced several volumes of Blue, Barry&Pancakes, a zany story about three animal friends who go on out-of-this-world adventures!
Jason Patterson and Dan Abdo met in the back of the art room in highschool, started drawing together, and never stopped. They both attended the Rhode Island School of Design and then both moved to New York City to begin their world conquest. These days Jason has jumped across the Hudson to live in New Jersey with his wife and two children. Dan returned to the place where it all started and lives in Vermont with his wife, two children, six chickens, two ducks, and one ancient cat. Even though they’re hundreds of miles apart they still draw together every day. Together at First Second, they've produced several volumes of Blue, Barry&Pancakes, a zany story about three animal friends who go on out-of-this-world adventures!

Gr 1–3—Best friends Blue, Barry, and Pancakes are ready for a day of fun-filled water safety demonstrations inside the treehouse they share. But when Pancakes inadvertently breaks the water tank they were planning to use and the trio has to chase a rogue ball throughout the town, they discover a new game at which they are remarkably skilled. Playing the game is fun for a while, but when egos begin to grow, the joy wanes and the three companions must rediscover what it truly means to have fun together. This comical graphic novel is well-suited to newer readers with an interest in slapstick humor and cartoonlike characters. Though this is a later book in the series, readers need not have read the previous installments for this one to make sense. Occasional asides guide readers to books where references have been made, but for the most part, this book is its own unique adventure. Using word bubbles, onomatopoeia, occasional butt jokes, and expressive illustrations, this graphic novel keeps readers engaged from start to finish. The overarching premise of the story is one of friendship and acceptance while working through disagreements, and it wraps up on a particularly positive and cheerful note. The clever design and appearance of this book enhances its appeal to young readers. VERDICT This is a fun and accessible graphic novel, and a good comical option for young readers to enjoy.—Mary Lanni
