Blizzard of 77: Great Plains Blizzard of 77
A Story of Death-Desolation-
Disaster-Tragedy and Survival

The stories behind many of the twenty four deaths attributed to this storm will be revealed as never before through firsthand accounts by many of the rescue people involved. Don’t expect any sugar coated accounts. Some are quite tragic, including three school children near Ramah Colorado found frozen to death and an eighteen year old on the Rosebud reservation that was not found until the snow had melted enough to reveal his body. Most personal interviews were never reported in news accounts although by today’s reporting would be thought of as heroic or life-saving. Most never made the news and in many cases their ordeal was never fully known even by their neighbors. I saw a calf that had just been born and was still in the birth sack. Oveta continued I broke it open as it was drowning in its own juices. I reached into its little mouth to try to clear the liquid but when I did the bitter cold wind entered just as it took its first breath and froze its lungs. It died in my hands, frozen from the inside out before I could even wipe it clean.
