Bleak House or Poor Jo: The 1876 Theatrical Adaptation
Playwright and adaptor George Lander wrote some of the Victorian era's most produced and popular melodramas, and his adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Bleak House" was no exception to the style of theatre that was popular with Victorian audiences. Highlighting the sentimentality and dramatic, Lander's adaptation focused on the character of Jo, making it a favorite of audiences. The play remained popular through out the years, and was revived as late as 1936 in a production at the Palladium Theatre. Lander would later go on to adapt a successful production of Dickens' "The Old Curiosity Shop" in 1883.
