Elegant Trogon: Description: 12". Medium-large tropical bird of the border range canyons with yellow bill, orange eyering, white breast band, and long tail barred black-and-white on the underside.

MALE: Emerald green above, scarlet red below; uppertail coppery-green and underside finely barred with wavy black lines.

FEMALE: White "teardrop" behind eye; neutral grayishbrown upperparts; brownish vest; pink abdomen; uppertail bronze and undertail heavily barred black.

FIRST SPRING MALE: Iridescent green on back and largely crimson below, but thick bars on undertail. Some retain shadowy "teardrop" behind eye, and may have "vest coat" with incomplete red underparts.

JUVENILE: Like female but with rows of large white spots on the wing coverts. Fledges with only half-grown tail, but in the first month the tail attains full length.
