Description: This is the third edition of a book on immunology that is part of a series designed primarily for undergraduates as an introduction or to use as a study guide before examinations. Given the rapid changes in immunology, updates are usually welcome, although some students will try to save money by using an outdated edition.
Purpose: The authors hope that this book will provide an understanding of current concepts about the immune system and its importance in human disease. The chapters begin with a short summary of what is to follow and then discuss the subject more fully in a relatively easy-to-read style. Although there are many textbooks of immunology on the market, one must assume that this has been successful with students since it is in its third edition.
Audience: The book is aimed at undergraduates, but could easily be used as a review for medical or dental students. It would be most useful in a course that uses multiple-choice exams, since it is designed to make it easy to recall facts. It might be less suitable for students in a course in which they must synthesize material to answer exam questions. The authors are well known to the immunology community.
Features: Chapters on basic principles of immunology are well done. The sections on the breakdown in the immune system are a bit brief, but cover the basic details. The chapter on gender and the immune system is one that is not always included. Immunosenescence is also covered well for this type of book. Figures are easy to follow, but are primarily black-and-white cartoons. There are few photomicrographs.
Assessment: If a student wanted a review book, this one is suitable. It is more detailed than a book of definitions, which apparently some students find useful. However, as a standalone book, it may be difficult to follow unfamiliar concepts based on this material alone. Immunology is a rapidly changing field, and this new edition is quite justified.
