Overview

The field of transplantation has grown exponentially over the last few decades, and leaders in the field may argue that we have seen only the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps in no other discipline is there a need for multidisciplinary dialogue, debate, and approaches to patient care. In preparing this book, we have attempted to introduce readers to a few of the key clinical and ethical issues confronting the field of transplantation today. In so doing, we recognize that the face of transplantation may change dramatically in the years to come. Nevertheless, the issues raised throughout this book will serve as a useful introduction to important clinical issues and as a catalyst for clinicians and researchers to expand the horizons of transplantation. Health professionals involved in evaluating and treating transplant patients must be knowledgeable of the indications for transplantation and patient outcomes and the process of evaluation and management. Chapters 1 and 2, focusing on solid organ transplantation and blood/marrow transplantation, provide this important contextual information. The next two chapters address what is often considered the most significant issue facing the field of transplantation - organ donation. While the number of patients needing transplantation has risen dramatically in recent years, the rate of organ donation has remained relatively stable. Chapter 3 highlights the many ethical issues surrounding the more general concept of organ donation, while Chapter 4 focuses specifically on the burgeoning interest in living organ donation.

Description: This book provides an overview of many issues a recipient of a transplant may experience, including great detail regarding the various phases of transplant and the impact on the patient and caregiver. It would be a great tool to use for an introduction to the transplant service for new medical providers.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to the many clinical and ethical issues raised in the area of transplantation. These objectives are worthy and are necessary to discuss, explore, and research as the need for transplant grows. The book is a wonderful tool to provide an introduction into the multifaceted world of transplant.
Audience: The book appears to be written for all members of a multidisciplinary transplant team. It is a great tool for the student, resident, nurse coordinator, nutritionist, social worker, psychiatrist, those in spiritual care, and anyone involved in the transplant team.The authors' credentials are not noted anywhere in the book, and it would be beneficial if they were provided.
Features: This is an overview of transplant for both solid organ and blood and marrow transplant. It also broaches the subjects of ethical, psychological, and social issues surrounding transplant. I found the chapter on adherence to the medical regimen in transplantation to be most useful as a transplant social worker. I was dissappointed in the chapter on substance abuse and transplantation as it did not provide any new information. It appears to be more of an overview of old studies rather than the presentation of new data on this topic.
Assessment: This book provides a great overview on the multifaceted issues of transplant. It would be useful tool for an introduction to transplant for new students and employees joining the transplant team.
