Biocatalytic membranes are artificial membranes that initiate, support, and maintain chemical reactions that need compartmentalization. In extension of this statement, this book describes their particular role in industrial settings, for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. This book provides ""an analysis of biocatalytic membrane reactors,"" from basic aspects and from applications. This is a very useful standpoint. It allows for a discussion of the guiding physicochemical principles and the industrial scales at which these principles can be operated (in the case of desalination of water by inverted osmosis from the equations describing the principle to the astounding number of ""millions of cubic meters of desalted water"" produced daily worldwide by reverse osmosis). The seven chapters provide a fairly complete review of the theoretical and practical implications of membrane techniques. This text is interesting for students, engineers, scholars, and perhaps also for high school teachers searching for novel technologies other than medicine and computers. The mathematics may be too superficial for experts but certainly plenty for lay persons. The Italian authors are experts and have the gift to present a complex matter in a rather straightforward language. The chapters are enriched by graphs depicting membrane structures and flow diagrams of industrial processes. Extensive citation of primary literature underlines the scientific use of the book. Examples reaching from water purification in the tanning industry to the design of an artificial liver underline the potency of the technology and present new insights to a broad variety of readers. Although far from being ascolorful as a typical American textbook for unmotivated biomedical students, its frugality is proof that scientific excitement is evoked through knowledge and not through the artistic performance of a lecturer. Reviewers are supposed to read extracts and come up with a statement. I read everything because I was caught by the exciting possibilities described here. In a second edition, the authors may include some additional photographic material or other more direct examples how these membranes work (if the publisher's economic situation allows). Otherwise, in the words of Siskel and Ebert: two thumbs up!
