Big Lin and Little Lin

Big Lin and Little Lin is a children's story by Zhang Tianyi published in 1932. It could be thought of as a socialist fairy tale. Big Lin and Little Lin are separated shortly after the death of their parents and the story tells of their very different experiences in a world peopled with absurd creatures who represent the cruelties and inanities of greed and power. Zhang Tianyi, however, has a soft spot for his evil characters which are drawn with amusement and here and there a touch of compassion. Ultimately, greed is punished and the good prevail. The story has enjoyed immense popularity with both children and adults since its publication.

About the Author

I am a retired Chinese teacher (Douglas College, New Westminster 1988-2015). Since retirement I have taken up old interests in earnest—Chinese-English translation (literary), poetry and the writing of novels for adults and young readers. My interests include Chinese literature and history, British history and classical music. My wife Siew is an artist who grew up in Kuala Lumpur. We lived in China, Taiwan and Malaysia in the 1980s. We currently live in Vancouver, Canada.
