J. James Exon was big in stature, big in heart, and big in politics and government, both in Nebraska and nationally. The thirty-third Nebraska governor, who began his life in politics as a precinct worker for the Democrats, went on to serve as U.S. senator for eighteen years after his governorship, retiring in 1997. About the Author

Charles M. Pallesen Jr. first met Jim Exon during Nebraska Governor Frank Morrison�s 1960 and 1962 campaigns. Pallesen was subsequently involved in all of the Exon campaigns as a volunteer and served as finance chair for the 1978 Senate campaign and as chair of the 1984 and 1990 Senate campaigns. He was also involved in the campaigns of many other Democrats, including Bob Kerrey, Ben Nelson, Chris Beutler, Hess Dyas, and Gerry Finnegan. Pallesen graduated from Doane College, the Nebraska College of Law, and the George Washington School of Law.

Samuel Van Pelt was Governor J. J. Exon�s first director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance. Exon later appointed him as Lancaster County District Court judge. Van Pelt has been active in politics, the private practice of law, and has served as a private arbitrator, facilitator, and investigator. Both Van Pelt and Pallesen served as officers in the United States Army.
