The Great Fraud is a novel by Edward Phillips Oppenheim, combining suspense, espionage, and intrigue. The story revolves around a fateful meeting between two similar-looking men, one a Briton named Everard Dominy, the other a German named von Rajachten. Their confrontation takes place in Africa, where von Rajachten seeks to kill Dominy and steal his identity with the aim of infiltrating British society as a spy for Germany during the period before World War I. Von Ragstein returns to Britain under the identity of Dominy and is able to convince everyone that he is the real Dominy, although some of his customs and behavior differ due to his long stay in Africa. Complications arise when von Rajachten's mistress learns of his true identity and proposes to him, but he postpones this due to his dangerous mission. At the same time, Lady Dominy, Dominy's wife, suspects that the returned man is not her real husband, but despite her suspicions, the mystery of the identity remains. The story takes a suspenseful turn as tensions rise over the revelation of the true identity, in a combination of crime, thriller, and deception, creating a suspenseful adventure that leads the reader through political and personal intrigues.
