Overview

This is a classic session with Hank Williams assuming the role of Luke the Drifter. These stunning narratives will surely conjure up images of campfires and Sundays at the chapel. The selections are backed by organ, steel guitar, or his own acoustic guitar strumming, which has always been overlooked. Old favorites such as "Men with Broken Hearts," "I've Been Down That Road Before," and "Beyond the Sunset" are all treated with special care, but "The Funeral" is the session's most stirring moment. It is hard to believe that Hank Williams was still in his twenties (he died when he was 29) when this music was recorded. He is an American treasure and this is one of his most enduring recordings. [Mercury's 1994 reissue included two bonus tracks.] ~ Robert Taylor
