Overview

An irresistible new love story from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fool's Gold series, a town Library Journal calls “so appealing, readers will want to start scoping out real estate.”

To overcome her painful past, baker Shelby Gilmore goes on the hunt for a friend-a male friend-to convince her stubborn psyche that men can be trusted. But where in a town as small as Fool's Gold will the petite blonde find a guy willing to not date her?

Dark, charming Aidan Mitchell puts the “adventure” in Mitchell Adventure Tours...and into the beds of his many willing female tourists. Until he realizes he's inadvertently become that guy-the one-night Casanova-and worse, everyone in town knows it. Maybe Shelby's boy/girl experiment will help him see women as more than just conquests so he can change his ways and win back his self-respect.

As Aidan and Shelby explore the secret lives of men and women, the heat between them fires up the Fool's Gold rumor mill. If no one will believe they're just friends, maybe they should give the gossips something to really talk about!

Mallery returns to the tiny mountain town of Fool's Gold, Calif., in the 20th and final book in her contemporary Fool's Gold series (after Marry Me at Christmas). Shelby Gilmore followed her ski racer brother, Kipling, to town, and bought into the local bakery. After her abusive upbringing, men terrify her. Town playboy Aidan Mitchell will sleep with any woman who comes through town, but only if she's a tourist. When the two team up as friends without benefits to overcome their fears—Shelby's belief that intimacy means abuse, and Aidan's belief that commitment means pain and extreme self-sacrifice—neither expects the arrangement to turn into a true romance. Even as they try to insist that they're only friends, it's obvious to everyone else—both fictional characters and readers—that they'll end up together. Mallery spins such an appealing town in Fool's Gold that readers will want to move in, or at least return for many visits. Even though the ending is eminently predictable, this expertly characterized tale has heart and soul. (May)

Appalled to realize he's turned into a one-night stand jerk when it comes to women, charismatic Aidan Mitchell is determined to change his ways. When pastry chef Shelby Gilmore, who has relationship issues of her own, suggests that they agree to a six-month platonic friendship so they can hang out together and learn what makes the other gender tick, he says he'll give it a shot. The results are touching and hilarious and surprise them both—although not the rest of the town. A hero who needs to figure out how to appreciate and respect women and a battered heroine who must learn to trust men strike a bargain that ends brilliantly. VERDICT This insightful, laughter-laced story fairly crackles with sexual tension and has a lot to say about friendship, love, and relationships. Heartwarming and memorable. Mallery (Marry Me at Christmas) lives in Seattle. [An April LibraryReads pick.]

Tanya Eby gives a pleasant performance of this story of love and friendship in the town of Fool's Gold. Shelby Gilmore, a lovely woman with trust issues, asks handsome Aidan Mitchell, a man-about-town, to participate in an experiment: six months of a platonic relationship to help each other change. Using tonal differences and great acting talent, Eby captures each character's warmth, frustration, goodness, and vulnerability. This is a light listen, perfect for a summer chaise longue or a winter easy chair. A.C.P. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine
