Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was descended from a long line of Russian nobles. His high birth and refined intelligence set him apart from other Russian writers of the time. He spent a short time in university before joining the military as an officer. After a short time, he left the army, appalled by the waste and horrors of conflict. Increasingly disillusioned with Russian society, Tolstoy evolved into a political and revolutionary figure. He developed ideas such as peaceful protest; ideals which were later upheld by iconic leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writers including Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf have praised Tolstoy as an inspiration.
