About the Author

Prof. Susan E. Hauser is the ABI Robert M. Zinman Resident Scholar for the fall 2012 semester and an associate professor of law at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham, N.C., where she teaches bankruptcy, civil procedure and corporations. She publishes and presents in the areas of mortgage modification, predatory lending, and the intersection between constitutional law and bankruptcy law and procedure. Prof. Hauser received the American Bankruptcy Law Journal’s 2012 Editor’s Prize, awarded by the ABLJ’s editorial board, for her article “More Than Abstract Justice: The Defense of Marriage Act and the Equal Treatment of Same-Sex Married Couples under Section 302(a) of the Bankruptcy Code,” 85 Am. Bankr. L.J. 195 (2011). She was also a fall 2005 ABLJ Fellow and is currently a peer reviewer for the ABLJ. Prof. Hauser is a member of the North Carolina State Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. She clerked for U.S. Bankruptcy Judge J. Rich Leonard and U.S. District Judge W. Earl Britt, both of the Eastern District of North Carolina, and began her legal career as an attorney for Legal Aid in Robeson County, N.C. Prof. Hauser is a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina School of Law.

Alane A. Becket is a managing partner at Malvern, Pa.-based Becket & Lee LLP, where she specializes in representing creditors in bankruptcy matters, primarily consumer lenders and debt purchasers. Becket & Lee is a Women’s Business Enterprise, as certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. Ms. Becket is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and has represented creditors and debt purchasers in commercial and bankruptcy matters and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) defense. She serves on ABI’s Board of Directors and as an executive editor for the ABI Journal. She also serves on the editorial board of ABI’s online Consumer Bankruptcy Section and is a past co-chair of ABI’s Consumer Bankruptcy Committee. Ms. Becket has written and lectured extensively on consumer collection and bankruptcy practices, and co-authored ABI’s Consumer Bankruptcy: Fundamentals of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13, Third Edition. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University and received her J.D. from Widener University School of Law.
