About the Author

KAREN CHAVEZ is the assistant sports editor and outdoor recreation reporter at the Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper. She has published various articles on dogs and hiking. In addition, she is the editor of Mountain Travel Guide, a twice-yearly magazine/visitor's guide. Karen is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. She lives in the mountains of western North Carolina and has hiked extensively throughout the state with her dog, a black Lab named Shelby.
