Editorial Reviews

JULY 2020 - AudioFile

The social strictures of the 1950s drive this engrossing audiobook, in which a year at an Italian art academy becomes the crucible for the intense relationship between two Connecticut girls. Narrator Jill Winternitz lends a down-to-earth intimacy to the voice of Bridget, who longs not only for independence from her middle-class multiracial family but also for validation from her peers. Bridget channels these hopes and frustrations into a dangerously charged friendship with popular classmate Isabella, who seems to reciprocate, at first. As voiced by Winternitz, Bridget has a sympathetic youthfulness that will keep listeners engaged even when she is distinctly unsympathetic. Moreover, Winternitz gives equal attention to Bridget’s passion and the sensual details of the Italian countryside. The result is an atmospheric and immersive audio experience.
