What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

Beautifully written, imaginatively illustrated and systematically presented, this critical encounter with common sense makes me want to study sociology all over again. Lucky are the students who will read it.' - Michael Burawoy, President of the International Sociological Association

'Sociology invites us to think differently about the familiar. The results can be – should be – disruptive. Being Sociological captures the sociological imagination in terms of six key themes that provide creative methods of understanding social reality. These signposts also give this volume both discipline and coherence. Thinking of society as process, the authors cover a wide range of social activities from feeling to working, and from consuming to modernizing. These sociological concepts are carefully applied to major contemporary issues such as the Arab Spring, violent conflict in Chechnya, and global warming. For students, vice-chancellors and politicians asking the standard question ('why do sociology?'), Being Sociological provides compelling answers.' – Bryan S. Turner, The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, USA

Praise for the First Edition:'I generally find introductory texts rather bland and uninspiring, but not in this instance. Overall I think the editors and their contributors have succeeded in delivering a text that offers an original and interesting approach to the difficult task of introducing sociology to students' - Professor Barry Smart, School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies, University of Portsmouth, UK

'The writing is remarkably coherent for a multi-authored book [and] the style is accessible to students new to sociology. I like it. The book is interesting to read - never boring.' - Professor Kenneth Roberts, School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Liverpool, UK

'This is a refreshing 'take' on the subject and provides the strongest claim to originality competitive market.' - David Pearson, Reader in Sociology, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
