Beginning to End: Our Universe Inside Out

When and how did the universe begin? What gave rise to the myriad galaxies and immense super-clusters of galaxies that exist today? And how might it all end? In fact, will it ever end?

These questions have perplexed philosophers of old. But with the advent of exciting new technologies and astrophysical techniques, scientists have pieced together a compellingly coherent account of both the beginning and end of the cosmos - with much now understood about the billions of years in between the mysterious start and possibly freakish finish.

About the Author

Science writer and lecturer Peter Spinks holds a master’s degree and has published research articles in international academic journals. Since 1980, he has broadcast and written for several of the world’s foremost media organisations, including Radio Four and the World Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, The Guardian and The Observer newspapers and New Scientist magazine in London.

In 1996, he was appointed science reporter of The Age newspaper in Australia. A selection of his online articles and features, including clips of the video segment ‘Science Matters’, as well as several static and interactive graphics, can be found in the archive at: www.theage.com.au/by/peter-spinks-hve9

Peter also compiled and presented a public science series, which evolved through reader interest in several of the ‘big questions’ raised in his articles and video presentations. The popular series took the form of live events in which a panel of experts addressed an audience of invited guests on key issues, such as the origin of life and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The events were filmed – on occasion live-streamed – and then broadcast as a series on mainstream media platforms across Australia.

He now delivers a variety of professional media-skills and science-outreach workshops at prominent universities and science research organisations around Australia and other parts of the world. More details: scienceoutreachworkshops.weebly.com/courses.html

Peter wrote the science journalism chapter for an international textbook, Science Communication in Theory and Practice (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2001). Wizards of Oz, his book about breakthroughs by Australian scientists, was twice the No.1 bestseller on New Scientist’s list of top-selling science books.
